Tanga Tanga MPs backing DP Ruto’s bid for presidency have come to hit at the Kikuyu Council of Elders last week remarks targeting William Ruto. The elders told off the DP and warned him on his constant disrespect on President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying defying the president and proceeding with his political campaigns is defying the entire Gikuyu community. Tanga Tanga MPs now say the council of elders, which has been playing a major role in the region’s politics has lost its bearing and should not engage in politics.
” We do not need these prophets of doom. The Gikuyu community requires guidance from the elders, they should be cautioned that the community is aware of the political connections, hatched to start unnecessary propaganda against DP,” said MP Ndindi Nyoro. ”Kenyans are aware of the political missions being prepared but majority are determined to support Ruto to assume the Presidency, as it has been known by Jubilee party legislators,” he added.
The Kikuyu Council of Elders convened one of is biggest meetings this year in Nyeri, bringing together a record of over 2,000 elders spanning across the counties of Nyeri,Kiambu,Laikipia,Muranga,Nakuru,Kirinyaga,Nakuru as well as Lamu. The meeting held at Kabiruini on the outskirts of Nyeri Town had a single declaration: Kikuyus will not support DP William Ruto and all his Central Kenya stooges in 2022.
In a strongly worded message to the DP and Central Kenya MPs going around the region with millions trying to win support for him, the elders said they will not allow any more disrespect being shown to President Uhuru Kenyatta and that the region will not be brokered for money by ‘tukunias’.
”No one carries a vote for another ,so those promising Ruto votes from the region, we know you; and you are not the first ‘tukunias’ in the history of the Kikuyu people.“We love peace, but our silence should not be taken for granted. The community will not bow to intimidation and threats. This is the message we are sending today and we will be taking around the country, ” said the council’s chair Wachira Kiago.
Vice chair David Muthoga accused Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro of promising Mr Ruto the support of the Kikuyu community before “consulting” the people.Speakers at the event also declared unwavering support for the handshake between President Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The Council’s Secretary Peter Munga accused Deputy President William Ruto of disrespecting President Uhuru by starting early 2022 campaigns in Mount Kenya region. He also said Ruto is a stumbling block in the president’s efforts to fight corruption.
“The DP has been playing petty politics meant to undermine the President and divide Central Kenya, despite the Head of State telling politicians to stop early campaigns. He is also at the forefront undermining the president’s efforts to eliminate corruption,” said Munga.
