That beleaguered Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was grilled yet again by the EACC over theft of public resources and money laundering was because of an incident that occurred over the weekend.
There was drama in Kiambu last Saturday, June 8 as governor Waititu openly clashed with his county woman right before First Lady Margret Kenyatta’s eyes.
This embarrassment of President Uhuru’s wife is what led to Waititu spending better parts of his day on Tuesday being grilled for the tenth time in two weeks at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices as an ongoing probe into graft at the county intensified.
During a tree planting exercise which was graced by the first lady, leaders including woman representative Gathoni Wa Muchomba took the chance to take a swipe at Waititu, accusing him of thoroughly embarrassing the county with various scandals that have his name all over them.
She put Waititu on the spot further by challenging him to account for county funds which mysteriously disappeared under Waititu’s tenure. “I saw how you (Waititu) were cornered and this should continue until stolen public funds are returned. We have a problem and it is only fair that I speak out as a representative of the people.” Wa Muchomba said amid tension during the event.
Waititu, did noto take Wa Muchomba’s comments lying down and he hit back immediately.
“If you have any evidence against Baba Yao (Waititu), please take it to where it is needed. Stop bringing it up in churches, funerals and public events like this one graced by her Excellency the First Lady.” Waititu fired back.
“It is true that I am being investigated and I accept it, indeed so many people are being investigated. However, that is not a big deal as those investigating me do not know me.” Said the governor. “Even Gathoni (who is accusing me) only saw me about two-three years ago and does not know me,” he hit back.
Environment CS Keriako Tobiko tried to diffuse the situation by acknowledging the presence of the First lady but the situation took a turn for the worse as counter-accusations soon emerged.
The incident came only days after Waititu was badly heckled by his Githurai faithful on Sunday, June 2 in the presence of Deputy President William Ruto.
