After the demise of Kibra MP Okoth, the list of individuals planning to replace the MP has grown longer barely a week after Okoth’s cremation. Kibra constituency is the heart and soul of ODM party and any candidate who clinches the party’s ticket is as good as the elected Member of Parliament. However, the seat has attracted a number of strong voices in ODM and it would be interesting to watch how the nomination exercise pans out.
Among those who have expressed their interest in the seat are former Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra, who claims he was originally born in Kibra so he is capable of representing the constituency in parliament. Elizabeth Ongoro, the former ODM nominated Senator who decamped to the ANC after not getting ODM ticket for Ruaraka seat is also another notable politician with the ability to marshal ground forces for the Kibra seat. After Imran Okoth declared his interest in the seat, another brother to Ken Okoth, Bobby Okoth, who is based in the US has now thrown his hat on the ring and wants to face off with Imran, plus other hopefuls for the seat.
Eliud Owalo, who had fallen out with Raila Odinga in 2017 for denying him the Kibra ticket is back and now wants to fight for the ODM ticket. Owalo in 2017 claimed Raila did not want him to be the ODM candidate in Kibra because Raila had a preferred choice for the seat.
Others who have declared interest on the seat are Ruth Odinga, Raila’s younger sister, Kennedy Odede, Catherine Okoth who is an MCA, Paul Obia, Ochieng Jera, Owino K’Otieno, Paul Obia, radio presenter Shaffie Weru, Ketta Onyango and Akothee who is rumoured to be preparing herself to take a stab in politics.
